What is a composite door?
A composite door is a front or exterior door constructed from multiple materials, rather than being made of just timber, just uPVC or just metal.
The idea is to combine the strengths of different materials to deliver superior performance in terms of durability, insulation, security and appearance.
In practice, a composite door typically comprises of:
-
A core made of timber, or foam-insulated materials (polyurethane foam), sometimes with reinforcing.
-
A skin of glass-reinforced plastic (GRP, also called fibreglass) or other tough exterior layer, to provide weather resistance and durability.
-
A robust outer frame (often uPVC or metal reinforced) and weather seals to provide stability and prevent warping.
-
Decorative finishes (wood-grain effect, colours, glazing) to give the look of a high-end door.
In short: composite doors give you many of the aesthetic qualities of traditional timber doors, but with modern performance benefits.
